Packing Tips : Getting Ready for Your Move
Proper and careful packing for moving is the best protection for your household items. The time you take here will pay big dividends in protecting your belongings as well as making the best use of the trailer space when loading. And since you are packing your household yourself, you have ultimate control of this part of your move. These helpful tips will make your move that much better:
Boxed Items
- Carefully protect all items inside boxes by individually wrapping them with wrapping paper, newspaper or bubble wrap.
- Use boxes whenever possible for all items. Sturdy boxes provide additional protection, and loading the trailer will be much easier and you will gain better utilization of the trailer. Unusual shaped items take up extra space and make loading the trailer more complicated.
- Use plenty of tape and wrapping paper -- this is far cheaper than losing items to damage during the move.
- Clearly mark "Fragile" on each box that has breakable items in it, so they can be easily identified for loading on the top of heavier boxes or items.
- Mark the room and contents of each box to help your organization and unpacking at your new home.
TV, Stereo, VCR/DVD, Computer and other Electronics
- Box all of these items whenever possible. TV’s or other items too large for a box should be wrapped in blankets, comforters or paper moving pads.
- Original manufacturer boxes are best.
Household Furnishings
- Mattresses should be packed in the manufacturer’s box if available. Otherwise, mattress bags or stretch wrap will help protect them from getting dirty.
- Table legs should be removed if possible.
- Sofas, chairs and tables should all be wrapped in blankets, paper moving pads or stretch wrap.
- Dressers and desks may be moved with the contents in the drawers as long as breakables are removed and each drawer is secured with tape.
LOADING THE TRAILER Taking time and care in loading the trailer will not only save you money; it will protect your household items during moving. Loading items tight and close together will prevent shifting during transit, which reduces the chance of damage. Following these guidelines will make your move easier.
- Rent both a 12-14 foot TRAILER LOADING RAMP and APPLIANCE DOLLY. Ramps and dollies can be rented by the day at most moving rental stores and will make loading the trailer easier and safer.
- Load heavy items on the bottom.
- Place appliances on the floor against the front wall.
- Load sofas on end and secure in place with other large boxes or appliances. This makes best use of available space.
- Use plenty of paper moving pads or blankets to protect all furniture. (Available online through WeHaul Moving)
- If mattresses are not boxed, lay down cardboard or paper moving pads to protect them from the floor.
- Fragile and light items must always be loaded on top.
- Make use of all space. Tuck blankets, pillows, cushions or cardboard in unused spaces to prevent shifting during the move.

Kitchen and Dining Room
- Wrap each item individually and pack "snugly" into sturdy boxes. Use plenty of paper and fill extra spaces with additional paper. "Dish-pack" boxes designed specifically for kitchen items can be purchased at WeHaul Moving or rental store and will provide the best overall protection.
- Use towels or bubble wrap for small kitchen appliances before they are loaded into boxes.
- Put heavier items on the bottom of all boxes.
Refrigerators, Stoves, Washing Machines
- Refrigerators should be empty of all contents, defrosted and taped shut.
- All appliance hoses and cords should be taped or secured to the side or top of the appliance.
- The washing machine "tub" should be secured so it does not rock back-and-forth during transit. A brace for this purpose can be purchased at a packaging or truck rental store.
Household Decor
- Lamps should be disassembled and boxed whenever possible.
- Pictures and wall hangings should be individually wrapped and boxed in groups of two or three.
- Fragile items should be individually wrapped and packed "snugly" into sturdy boxes. Use plenty of wrapping paper and fill extra spaces with additional wrapping paper. "Dish-pack" boxes provide the best overall protection and should be used if available. They can be purchased at WeHaul Moving, packaging or moving rental stores.
Garage, Storage and Garden Items
- All power and gas equipment (lawn mower, weed eater, chain saw, chipper, tiller, etc.) must have the oil and gasoline drained. WeHaul Moving does not allow any items containing oil or gas.
- Propane tanks (barbecue) must be empty.
- Garden tools can be strapped together in a "bundle."
- Use smaller sturdy boxes for heavy hand tools and use plenty of wrapping paper.
- Disassemble all items that you can. This will take up less space and will make it easier to load and pack.
PARTITION “SEALED DIVIDER” When the trailer is delivered to your home for loading, WeHaul Moving will also provide (on specified shipments), a partition with instructions for installation. The partition acts as a barrier between your goods and other goods that we will load in the trailer. The Sealed Divider is not designed to withstand the weight of your goods if the load shifts during transit. You must install the Sealed Divider before we can pick up the trailer for transit.
